The Bangla words for ‘Good Morning’ are Shuvo Sakal
or Su Provat where Shuvo and Su are meant for
‘Good’ and ‘Sakal’ (pronounced Sokal) and Provat are
meant for Morning. In fact, Bangla speaking people(
including Muslims, Hindu, Christians and the
Buddhists) are not habituated in addressing people by
the term Shuvo Sakal or Su Provat. Rather Muslims
usually address others by saying As salamu alaikum(
Peace be upon you) throughout the day and night and
the customary Hindu greetings is usually Namaskar(
the root word in Sanskrit: namas, which means
“bowing or homage.”) through out the day and night
and the Bangalee
Christians and the Buddhists also do
not address anyone in the morning by the terms
Shuvo Sakal or Su Provat. So, Shuvo Sakal or
Su Provat are mainly limited to the dictionary and
normally are not used for addressing any Bangalee in
the morning.
